Les Cactus
The clincher for us was Pistol Pete, the twenty-five-foot cactus sculpture that announces the hotel...
La Maison Hotel is built around an idea its owners, Richard and Cornelia Schuster, brought with them: a Mediterranean-style courtyard that recalls the Cote d'Azur rather than the Mojave just beyond the hedges. Before Palm Springs, the couple ran a four-room bed and breakfast in Canada and cultivated more than twenty varieties of lavender, a passion that now fills the hotel's gardens alongside cacti and a working herb patch. Thirteen rooms wrap around a courtyard anchored by a 40-foot heated pool and spa, and the effect is closer to a private Provencal house that happens to take guests than a hotel with a theme bolted on.
We chose La Maison for the consistency of its idea, not just its prettiness. The lavender in the courtyard is the same lavender the Schusters have grown for years, the herb garden by the outdoor kitchen is there for guests to cut from, and the complimentary cruiser bikes fit a slower, European pace of travel rather than a rush between attractions. In-room spa treatments, arranged through Studio M Salon and Spa, extend that unhurried mood into the room itself. It is the kind of detail that only holds together when the owners live on site, which the Schusters do, and it shows in how settled the whole courtyard feels by mid-afternoon.
The hotel sits on East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs' Uptown district, close enough to galleries and restaurants for an evening out but quiet enough that the courtyard stays the real draw. A golf course within three kilometres and nearby cycling and hiking routes suit guests who want to use the complimentary cruiser bikes for more than a ride around the block. It is a location built for slow mornings on site followed by a short outing, rather than a base for covering the whole valley by car, and the quiet of the street outside matches the quiet inside the gate.
Prix: Luxe
Vibe: Provencal, intimate, garden-led
Chambres: 13 rooms with French doors and feather beds
Best For: couples seeking a quiet, adults-only European-style retreat
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the lavender the owners have grown themselves for years
Dining: no restaurant; continental breakfast daily, complimentary wine and beer poolside from 5pm, outdoor kitchen with herb garden
Amenities: 40-foot heated pool and spa, complimentary cruiser bikes, in-room spa treatments via Studio M Salon and Spa, L'Occitane amenities
Attractions: golf course within 3 km, Uptown Palm Springs galleries and restaurants, cycling and hiking routes
Each of the thirteen rooms opens through French doors and is dressed with king or queen feather beds, down duvets and luxury linens, a register closer to a countryside auberge than a desert motel. Flat-screen televisions and Wi-Fi cover the practical side, while lavender sachets and L'Occitane bath amenities carry the Provencal theme through to the bathroom shelf. The rooms are not large, and that is consistent with the hotel's premise: this is a stay built around the courtyard and the pool, with the room itself as a quiet place to sleep between them, not the main event of the visit.
Breakfast here is a continental spread with coffee, taken at guests' own pace rather than on a restaurant's schedule, and the real social moment comes later: complimentary wine and beer served poolside from five in the afternoon, when the day's heat starts to break. There is no formal restaurant on site, and the outdoor kitchen and BBQ exist instead for guests who want to cook with herbs cut steps away. It is a rhythm that rewards travellers happy to spend an evening by the pool rather than seek out Palm Springs' restaurant scene every night, and regulars tend to plan their day around it.

We recommend this place to travellers who want a hotel with a sense of humor:...
